Hmm, guess who produced it? Kanye f/ Santogold’s voice. It’s an ill song, but my feelings are mixed on this one. First, let me say that I genuinely liked the song ‘Swagga Like Us.’ In fact, it was probably the only good song on T.I.’s last album. (WTF happened to him?! He’s been on a steady decline ever since I’m Serious came out in ’01.)

Anyway, like I was saying, I liked ‘Swagga Like Us.’ I thought ‘hey, that’s cool Kanye figured out who M.I.A. is’ but these happy feelings don’t last long…. anybody remember that song ‘Stronger?!’ You might not be aware that in ‘Stronger’ Kanye in fact sampled some underground French house music dudes. I think their name was Daft…. uhm… Dunkz or something-OH YEAH! Punk! Daft Punk! That’s what they were called. Moving on….

Jay-Z & Santogold – Brooklyn Go Hard (prod. by Kanye West) 320 kbps / 9.2 MB

If you haven’t noticed, I’m doing my best to lay on a robust amount of sarcasm. Here’s my beef: Kanye samples Daft Punk & M.I.A. which is cool for like 2 seconds because I think maybe this will help broaden people’s terribly narrow taste in music, and, shit-who knows?! maybe this will set off a chain reaction of culture affluence so powerful that MTV goes back to showing music videos!

Unfortunately it doesn’t, and I find myself aggravated at all these drunk people singing along to the hook, without a clue in the world where it originated from. So, my beef isn’t with Kanye by any means. Shit, at least “Brooklyn Go Hard” has Santogold in the song. My beef is that nobody listens to music anymore to appreciate it, people listen to music so they can memorize the lyrics/dance associated with that song and have another vessel for “fitting in.”

I’m not trying to be one of those uber-elitist hipster snobs, because I hate them just as much as the “narrow-taste” people. Shit, maybe people will get really into Santogold. Maybe they’ll listen to such songs as “L.E.S. Artistes” and “Shove It” (the source sample of the song in this blog post) and maybe, just maybe, they’ll listen to the lyrics; and, start to re-evaluate the criteria being used to find their favorite songs ?!? Godspeed Hipsters and Conformists! Get out there, be different!

P.S. Just in case I didn’t properly convey my opinion on the song itself: I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jay & Santi’s respective flows are ripe, sitting effortlessly on-top of Kanye’s pristine production.

P.P.S. I didn’t account for the fact that maybe Kanye himself could balance this whole equation by continuing to sample really good music that’s only a year or so old. MGMT anyone!?

P.P.P.S. In case anybody was wondering, that’s my photoshop craftsmanship. SKILLLZZZZZ
