As if making a sequel to Tron already wasn’t cool enough. (HOLY FUCK! have you seen this trailer yet?!!?) Let’s flashback to the original Tron in 1982. Even though *cough* Journey *cough* provided 2 songs the soundtrack/main score was done by none other then Wendy Carlos (who did such soundtracks as Clockwork Orange and The Shining) she composed most of the score using a Moog synthesizer (awesome) and there was mad controversy because Disney couldn’t handle her electro-BEATZ. See Wikipedia for the full beef. Oh, and if your some DJ/producer/hipster dabbling in electronic music production and you don’t know who Wendy Carlos is, you definitely need to get up with her, like, now.

Fast forward to now, Tron Legacy is set to be released in 3D sometime (probably summer) 2010. Who’s behind the boards for the soundtrack? The relatively unknown French duo Daft Punk. Apparently they’ve already composed 24 tracks for the film, when the director was asked why he decided to have Daft Punk do the film score, he replied,

“How could you not at least go to those guys?”

I agree in full, and, let’s be honest when Daft Punk performs live they look like they just got spit out of the Tronverse. Unfortunately there’s going to be a fucking Journey song in it again, which I will forgive as long as Disney doesn’t fuck with Daft Punk like they did Wendy Carlos and forced an orchestra on her… classically trained musicians are so overrated. Anyway, here’s the Tron Legacy theme for download, apparently it’s done with Cryda Luv. I have no idea who Cryda Luv is but I’m guessing he/she named themselves after the amazing french record label, Crydamoure, owned by Daft Punker Guy-Manuel. Or maybe it’s just an artist Daft Punk made up.

Okay, I know that recently most of my posts have been on this whole euro-electro-hipster tip but I promise that after this I will post some hood tracks as well. Google Analytics straight punk’d me like “dawg, peep this pie chart: your hood tracks are slackin! you can’t just post ONE Common track and be off the hook!” and Google Analytics is always right.

However, first we must delve into the sonic minutia of this artist called Weird Tapes. Apparently it’s a side project somehow connected to the band Hail Social. I only like one Hail Social song, and to make things worse, it’s not even the original, it’s the Nick Catchdubs remix. I’m skeptical….

If it wasn’t already evident by this cool looking polar bear I yanked from their site, the music is ON-point. Think of Cut Copy, but add some 80′s flavoring and a shitload of top quality synthesizer work. Seriously-awesome-synths. Preview their tracks and soon enough they even got Weezy sayin “motherfucker, it’s iiiiiillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll.” These two are my favorites.

Weird Tapes – Glorious

Well put, Pharell. It looks like the Neptunes have finally taken notice to the advent of Baltimore Club and Electro in today’s club/dance scene. Common’s latest single “Universal Mind Control” has been leaked and it’s electro-infused production (courtesy of Pharrell) is bangin! I used the track open with in my newest promo set Pristine Gleam. I think this is the first time I’ve heard Common spitting over a track that’s 120 BPM(!) I must say I hope it’s not the last. Take a listen for yourself:

P.S. I just remembered having a dream (I neverrrrrrrrrr remember my dreams) where I was in some restaurant and the original sample to “The Light” was being played on the radio, and all of the sudden everybody was vibin to it hardcore as if they all knew “The Light” sampled this. Maybe I should talk to my therapist about this and not my blog.
