Best Rapper From New Orleans

…is Jay Electronica. GASP! What no Weezy Baby!?!? No disrespect to Mr. Venereal Disease, Lil’ Wayne is very talented, but Jay Electronica is light years ahead of the whole rap game… maybe the whole world. Jay Electronica is an amazing artist, I can’t wait to hear what he does next. The best way to describe him sonically: samples & loops from Willy Wonka & Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, DJ Shadow-type ambiance, Saul Williams meets Nas lyrical wordplay, laidback J.Dilla & No ID beats, minimal sound effects create complex beatscapes.

If you haven’t heard of dude I can’t accurately describe what makes him so good, other then the way his music hits your ears, or more importantly his words. That’s why I’ve included a couple of his songs as well as this interview conducted by BBC jazz legend Gilles Peterson, which is awesome in itself. I was talking to $port about how just listening to this dude stutter: you can hear the passion in his voice. Gilles and Jay sound almost unprepared yet they flow together like their 2 old men somebody happened to record… the furthest thing from being some record label arranged puff piece. Jay Electronica is one of the surgeon’s performing surgery on Hip-Hop. Isn’t authenticity refreshing!?

My favorite soundbyte is at 52:15 when Jay goes “Cheney shot A MAN in the face!” and you hear no response from Gilles, other then him cracking up. Also I completely cosign (and always have, for that matter) with the fact that Common’s Electric Circus was an amazing album that has always been slept on.
